Student diets under the microscope
30th August 2019
Are you soon to be student, or are you already one? Freshers is around the corner, which means constant drinking, takeaways and cheap unhealthy meals (we’ve been there, we know what you’re up to!).
We have done some digging into how long it would take to burn off some student favourite foods and drinks.
You’ve returned to your student accommodation after a boozy night out and you’re craving a takeaway pizza. Well, the typical number of calories in a 10 inch pizza amounts to 1,656 calories according to Canstar Blue.
The frightening bit. The recommended daily intake of calories is 2,500 for men and 2,000 for women, although these values can depend on many factors - this constitutes for most of our calorie intake.
How long would it take to burn off? Well, elite cyclists in the Tour de France will usually burn 3,500 to 4,500 calories on a single stage (one day of racing). Therefore, half a day or so riding the Tour de France peloton should work them calories off!
It would take a few hours of rock climbing to burn off the energy from most pizzas, an ABC article estimates 700 calories for women and 884 calories for men are burned in an hour session.
Approximately a pint of lager can contain around 180 calories - equivalent to a slice of pizza, according to drinkaware. Stouts and ales can amount to even more calories at around 250 calories per pint.
Meaning that one day trip to the pub can result in consuming a whole day of calorie intake just by drinking pints. That’s without including the chips, takeaway pizza and McDonald’s breakfast the following day!
To burn off the 180 calories in a standard strength pint of lager (4% ABV) a man would have to spend around 13 minutes running on the treadmill or 20 minutes cycling.
You’re waiting for your student loan to drop and you need a reasonably cheap meal that you can save for later in the week? Pasta is the perfect solution!
A standard bowl of Spaghetti Bolognese equates to 476 calories, which means walking for 1 hour 28 minutes or running for 46 minutes to burn off the calories.
McDonald’s after a night out or the following morning is always a popular choice. Unfortunately, statistics from UNILAD show that a Big Mac Burger amounts to 540 calories, that’s without the large fries and large coke adding an extra 790 calories!
How many hours of exercise does this mean you have to endure? For men, this means 5 hours and 53 minutes of strength training or biking for 2 hours and 13 minutes. The figures for women are even more excruciating! Women would have to commit to 6 hours and 57 minutes of yoga or rollerblading for 3hrs and 29 minutes!
