Alcohol is one of the biggest downfalls in most people’s diet and is something the majority of us look forward to at the weekend after a long week at work!

Alcohol can contain a lot of hidden calories in it, so opting for a lower calorie drink can help to keep you on plan whilst still able to socialise and enjoy yourself.

It’s extremely important to monitor how much you are in taking and being aware of the more drinks you have, the more calories you are having. You wouldn’t eat 5 Big Macs, but you could easily drink an equal number of calories if you’re not in control.

The key to any successful lifestyle change is everything in moderation. Meaning that as long as you’re still in control of what you intake, you can still enjoy your favourite tipple.

We have put together some drink ideas for you to try and still be able to enjoy the Royal Wedding or FA Cup Final this weekend on plan!

Gin and slimline tonic- 64 calories: Perfect for that summer get together!

Rum and diet coke- 58 calories: One of the best diet-friendly spirits!

Cosmopolitan- 99 calories: So you can still enjoy your cocktail evenings!

Flute of prosecco- 80 calories: Celebrate with a glass of your favourite bubbly!

Vodka and diet coke- 70 calories: Opt for diet coke to keep the calories low!

Single malt whiskey- 72 calories: On the rocks or top up with soda to stay on plan!

Bloody Mary cocktail- 90 calories: Delicious and one of your 5 a day!

Tequila and soda- 69 calories: For the more adventurous drinker!

Of course, generally alcohol and dieting do not mix well- your body processes alcohol first, leaving carbohydrates and fats to get stored as fat instead of getting used as fuel. But the key to staying on plan long term is moderation, so if you want to go out and enjoy yourself, knowing your calories and staying in control of your alcohol intake can help you to stay on plan.
