Keeping gyms open: The benefits

Gyms are safe. Gyms are essential. In this tough time period, we need them more than ever, because of the mental benefits as well as the physical benefits.

In this blog post, we look at the mental and physical impact lockdown has had on society and why gyms are so vital in coping with the challenges that lockdown presents.

The mental health benefits

Research by the office of National Statistics shows that more than two-thirds of adults in the UK report feeling worried about the effect COVID-19 is having on their life. The most common stresses are people worrying about their future (63%) feeling stressed or anxious (56%) and feeling bored (49%).

Gyms staying open during lockdown can improve people’s mood and decrease feelings of depression, anxiety and stress. Research states that when you exercise it releases feel-good endorphins which is a brain chemical associated with feeling happy, confident, and feeling less anxious.

The physical benefits 

People suffering with severe mental illness in the UK die on average 15-20 years earlier than the general population. This generally happens because of the physical side effects of mental health such as weight gain and engaging in less exercise - leading to more severe cases of COVID-19.

Shutting gyms will only increase the cases of major illnesses long-term, putting lives at risk. Regularly engaging in exercise can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50% and lower your risk of early death by up to 30%. 

We are safe. We are essential.

Based on the evidence, closing gyms will cause further damage to our mental and physical well-being, putting more pressure on the already stretched National Health Service and mental health facilities.

Since reopening, gyms and leisure facilities have been using extensive safety and cleaning measures to protect members. Research by ukactive shows that in 22 million visits since reponing only 78 cases of covid-19 have been reported in gyms.
