Get over your fitness fears

Dont be scared of fitness

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” Franklin D. Roosevelt

There are enough reasons that we give ourselves to defer our fitness regimes. Fear is one of those reasons and it takes on many forms. Managing your fears in terms of fitness can have a positive effect on your entire lifestyle! Some of the commonly reported reasons people give for not exercising regularly are included below, along with some ideas as to how you can deal with them.

Fear of Embarrassment

It’s almost impossible to die of embarrassment and people really admire those who are willing to try something new. Being publicly and ostentatiously imperfect can actually be liberating — you may just want to give it a try!

Fear of the Unknown

Your fitness is part of an on-going personal quest, the future of which being open and uncertain. Letting go of expectations and a fear of an unknown – and often unknowable – outcome is part of the fun. Try to let go, and then you can enjoy!

Fear of the Activity

Different activities appeal to different personalities, in the same way that different people may be afraid of different activities. For a novice, a swimming lesson could be the stuff of nightmares. Everyone has to start somewhere and it’s easier to conquer fears by taking smaller, defined steps. Find a club near you and our staff will piece together a program that ensures you are comfortable with each level of the activity before moving to the next, so that you can enjoy your progress as you go.

Fear of Pain

Avoiding pain is a reflexive human response, it’s natural! If our brain tells us something will hurt, most of us will automatically avoid it. A healthy fear of extreme discomfort serves us well, but uninformed fear can keep us from experiencing new things. Unlike traumatic injury, pain associated with athletic effort, usually delayed onset muscle soreness, can be a medal for your efforts. This can even become an achievment that you will actively seek.

Fear of Failure

Fear of failure can keep you from trying new ways to keep fit. Fear of failure encapsulates all the fears above and wraps them into one overwhelming package. “I don’t want to make a fool of myself, I’m afraid to try it, I don’t know what it will be like, I don’t want it to get hurt.” All these sentiments can combine to make us afraid to fail and therefore afraid to even try.

Expand horizons and embrace the new! Everyone’s looked foolish before, we’ve explored the unknown, we’ve experienced pain, and we have all failed somewhere along the line.Fear has no room in your fitness routine — Try something new, no matter how much it frightens you; you’ll be glad you did!

  1. Every one of these applied to me once upon a time!

Phew, I’m glad to be over them — the right gym eventually did it for me, and I’m still a member today, 5 years later.

  2. Great blog I’m adding you to my RSS feeder so as not to miss anything.
